BuiltWith review (2026): the most complete tech-stack data, if you filter it

BuiltWith found a technology in three out of four prospecting categories on 20 websites, with the cleanest live data of the tools we tested, from about $0.01 per lookup. It also keeps technologies a site dropped years ago, so ask for live data only.

Summarize

What we reviewed

BuiltWith sells lead lists, market reports and an API built on its crawl of the web. We reviewed the Domain API for one job: finding the technologies a company uses, for qualifying and personalising outreach.

Tested for

  • Tech-stack lookups on 10 SaaS and 10 e-commerce websites
  • Coverage of CRM, payments, email, reviews, analytics and ad pixels
  • Stale and non-technology entries in the response
  • Cost and coverage against DataForSEO and Amplemarket

Not scored here

  • Lead lists and market reports in the BuiltWith web app
  • Relationships, trends, company-to-URL and other APIs
3.9/ 5

Our score for BuiltWith, the average of four criteria

The best tech-stack data we tested: CRM, payments, email and pixels on most websites, from about $0.01 per lookup. Filter to live technologies, or it lists tools a site dropped years ago.

Best for

  • Qualifying accounts on the CRM, shop platform or payment tools they use
  • Personalising outreach with a company's marketing and analytics stack
  • E-commerce prospecting: platform, BNPL, email and review apps

Skip it if

  • You need back-office software a website doesn't show
  • Your targets build their shop or app on a custom platform
  • You only need the website framework, which DataForSEO finds for less
Ease of use3.5/5

One GET request per domain with JSON back. Flag names mislead: NOLIVE has nothing to do with live technologies, LIVEONLY does, and the raw response mixes tools with rankings and server locations.

Data quality4.0/5

The widest coverage we measured: 83% of SaaS and 76% of e-commerce categories. By default it keeps technologies it last saw years ago, and it can't see custom-built shop platforms.

Pricing value4.0/5

One credit per lookup: $0.0495 pay as you go, about $0.01 on the $995 Team plan with 100,000 credits a month. DataForSEO costs $0.012 but found a technology in one in seven categories.

API and agent access4.0/5

A REST API with an llms.txt, a free account endpoint and pay-per- use credits for agents. At most 8 requests at once and 10 per second.

What is BuiltWith?

BuiltWith is an Australian company that crawls the web and records the technologies each website uses: shop platforms, CRMs, analytics, payment providers, ad pixels and hosting. It sells that data as lead lists, market reports and APIs.

Its Domain API takes a domain and returns every technology BuiltWith has detected on it, each with the date it was first and last seen.

How good is BuiltWith's tech-stack data?

The most complete we tested. On 10 SaaS companies and 10 online stores it found a technology in 83% and 76% of the prospecting categories we checked: CRM and marketing automation, payments, email, reviews, analytics and ad pixels. DataForSEO found one in 13 to 14%, mostly the website framework. Amplemarket came close on coverage but has no detection dates and listed conflicting shop platforms for three of the ten stores.

A category counts when the tool found at least one technology in it, e.g. a CRM, a payment provider or an email tool. BuiltWith counted only technologies it marks live; Amplemarket has no detection dates and listed conflicting shop platforms for 3 of 10 stores. DataForSEO couldn't look up 2 websites that redirect.

What should you watch out for?

Old data. BuiltWith keeps every technology it has ever detected, so by default a Shopify store still shows the Magento it left years ago. Only 15 to 45% of the entries were seen in the last 90 days. Ask for live technologies only, with the LIVEONLY flag, before you filter on a tool.

Noise. Popularity rankings, CDN edge locations, server countries, currencies and copyright years come back as technologies. They aren't tools anyone chose, and they bury the ones that matter.

How much does BuiltWith cost?

Every Domain API lookup uses one credit, and failed lookups use none. Credits cost $0.0495 each pay as you go and less in larger packs; the Team plan, $995 per month with 100,000 credits, works out to about $0.01 per lookup. The list plans from $295 per month are for building lead lists in BuiltWith's app.

BuiltWith counts are live technologies after pipe0's cleanup; Amplemarket's are its list as returned, without dates, and include entries like "SQL".

BuiltWith and pipe0

pipe0 buys from BuiltWith and offers its Domain API as the tech stack pipe. It asks BuiltWith for technologies currently in use by default and drops the entries that aren't tools, so a company comes back as about 120 recognisable tools instead of 400 to 500 entries, grouped by type. You can widen it to the last 12 months or the full history, and run it on every row of a sheet or through an agent.

BuiltWith pros and cons

Pros

Coverage

It found a CRM, payment, email, review or pixel tool in 76 to 83% of the categories we checked on 20 websites, against 13 to 14% for DataForSEO.

Live data on request

Each technology carries first- and last-detected dates, and LIVEONLY returns only what BuiltWith saw since its latest full crawl.

E-commerce depth

Shop platform, BNPL, email and SMS, reviews and subscription apps: Klarna, Afterpay, Attentive, Klaviyo and Yotpo on the stores we tested.

Simple credit pricing

One credit per lookup on any API version, with a free endpoint to check the balance.

Cons

It never forgets

Without LIVEONLY it still listed Magento for two Shopify stores, last seen there in 2019 and 2020. Only 15 to 45% of all-time entries were seen in the last 90 days.

Noise in the response

Popularity rankings, CDN edge locations, server countries, currencies and copyright years arrive as technologies and need filtering.

Blind to custom platforms

Stores on in-house or unrecognised platforms show no current shop platform at all.

Confidence score misleads

Removed technologies keep a score of 1, and one gambling flag on a site set every non-infrastructure score to 0.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the BuiltWith API cost?

One credit per Domain API lookup. Credits cost $0.0495 each below 2,000 and less in larger packs. The Team plan at $995 per month includes 100,000 credits, about $0.01 per lookup.

Is BuiltWith data accurate?

Its live data named one shop platform for each store where it found one, with no contradictions, but by default it also returns technologies it last saw years ago. Ask for live technologies only (LIVEONLY) before you filter on a tool.

What does BuiltWith's NOLIVE flag do?

It skips an on-the-fly crawl of domains BuiltWith hasn't indexed. It doesn't remove dead technologies; LIVEONLY does that.

Is BuiltWith better than DataForSEO for tech-stack data?

Yes, in our October 2026 test. BuiltWith found a technology in 76 to 83% of prospecting categories on 20 websites, DataForSEO in 13 to 14%. DataForSEO costs $0.012 per lookup; BuiltWith $0.0495 pay as you go, or about $0.01 on its Team plan.

Can I use BuiltWith in pipe0?

Yes. pipe0's tech stack pipe calls BuiltWith's Domain API, returns only technologies currently in use by default, and drops entries that aren't tools. It costs 2 pipe0 credits per company.
